One of Marine Drive’s oldest landmarks, the Maharashtra Government’s printing press, is set for redevelopment to make way for the new Udyog Bhavan. According to reports, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has received approval for the project, with all necessary permissions from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) too.

A new chapter for Mumbai’s printing press story

Established in 1855, the Maharashtra Government’s printing press is one of the oldest government offices along Marine Drive. Over the years, it has played a key role in printing vital state documents, including state cabinet agendas, legislature papers, government reports and even Mumbai University’s question papers.

Currently, the press operates from two buildings—a ground-plus-two-storey structure and a ground-plus-four storey one. These will soon be demolished to make way for two wings: Wing A, with a ground-plus-four-storey building, and Wing B, featuring a ground-plus-six-storey structure. The project is slated for completion within three years, with MIDC set to construct 46,918 sq m, of which 29,254 sq m will be given back to the printing press.

According to MIDC estimates, the entire project, which the State Government has officially designated as Ratan Tata Udyog Bhavan, is estimated to cost approximately 800 crore.
