Commuters should prepare for travel disruptions this weekend due to scheduled mega blocks for platform extension work at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The blocks will affect both the Central Main Line and Harbour Line services.
The first block will start at 11:30 PM on Friday and continue until 4:30 PM on Saturday, affecting services between CSMT and Byculla on both fast and slow lines. The second block, lasting ten hours, will begin at 11:15 PM on Saturday and end at 9:15 AM on Sunday, impacting trains between CSMT and Byculla, as well as CSMT and Wadala on the Harbour Line.
Train services on affected routes will be suspended, and passengers are advised to use alternative transport such as Metro, BEST buses, or private vehicles.
Additionally, Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major expansion with the launch of the Panvel-Karjat corridor. The Central Railway (CR) has announced that the 29.6 km double-line suburban route will open within this financial year, enhancing connectivity between Mumbai and Karjat.
The corridor will feature three new stations: Chikhli, Mohape, and Chowk along with significant infrastructure, including three tunnels, two rail flyovers, 44 bridges, and multiple road over-bridges and under-bridges. The Wavarle tunnel, spanning 2,625 meters, will be the longest in Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
The corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Panvel and Karjat to about an hour. With three dedicated 12-car rakes, the route will ensure frequent train operations, offering an alternative to the heavily congested Kalyan Junction.
Beyond improved connectivity, the corridor is expected to boost Karjat’s appeal as a tourist and residential hub. Karjat, known for its lush landscapes, trekking trails, and scenic waterfalls, attracts visitors from Mumbai and Pune. It also hosts numerous health resorts and wellness retreats.
