The reconstruction of the Bandra Skywalk, which was shut in 2019, is all set to commence soon. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be awarding the reconstruction contract next month, with the project now estimated to cost ₹83 crores. This comes after the contract awarded earlier at ₹19 crore was revised and scrapped this year.

Features of the Reconstructed Skywalk

BMC officials have given a brief overview of the increase in the skywalk's reconstruction cost. Firstly, the redone skywalk will be 740 meters long, as opposed to its original length of 483 meters. Its width, on the other hand, will also be increased from 4.2 meters to 6.5 meters. The 34 pillars for the new skywalk in Mumbai will all be built using steel instead of concrete.

Furthermore, the skywalk in Bandra will have an additional canopy for shade, along with three new escalators. With these add-ons, the said skywalk outside the station in Bandra East will greatly enhance convenience for pedestrians.

It must be noted that BMC has already received bids from five contractors for the rebuild and the work order is expected to be issued within a month.
