Mumbai-Pune Expressway safety upgraded with the removal of a key traffic bottleneck

Khushboo Ali

In a move aimed at improving road safety and easing traffic bottlenecks, a vital section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has undergone a transformative upgrade. Highlighting the Khopoli Exit Area, this undertaking targets a crucial 1.5km segment of the expressway’s missing link, lying between Dheku and Adoshi villages in the Borghat section.

Expressway revamp with four lanes

The newly revamped stretch of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway addresses longstanding safety concerns, by widening the road and adding two lanes. These enhancements are aimed at mitigating challenges posed by a sharp turn and limited road space. Previously, these conditions resulted in erratic driving behaviours and frequent lane violations.

In tandem with these enhancements, a comprehensive traffic management overhaul has been implemented. This includes the closure of the existing three lanes designated for Mumbai-bound traffic, with vehicles now being redirected through a bypass that shares a portion with the upcoming missing link project.

The reconfigured layout boasts four lanes in total, with three lanes designated for Mumbai-bound traffic and one lane exclusively for vehicles heading towards Khopoli.

Diversion to start from March 4

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has issued a diversion notice for Mumbai Channel traffic following the completion of roadworks on the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway expansion project.

Under the revised arrangement, vehicles heading from Pune to Khopoli village via Mumbai should use the right lanes, while those traveling towards Mumbai should use the three left lanes. This diversion will come into effect from Monday, March 4, 2024.
