Mumbai to experience a wet weekend; IMD under scrutiny for faulty July forecasts

Residents can expect generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall today.

According to the latest IMD update, Mumbai residents can expect generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall, gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, and thundershowers with lightning across the city and its suburbs over the next 24 hours. The city’s temperature is expected to peak at 32°C, with a minimum of around 28°C.

Moreover, for August 21, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a Yellow Alert for the entire state of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. Reportedly, rains are likely to make another comeback around the weekend, between August 24-26.

IMD under scrutiny!

Even though we rely on the IMD for our daily weather updates, it’s no secret that the weather department’s forecasts can sometimes miss the mark. And it's not just us— the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) reportedly feels the same way.

As per sources, both the central and regional departments of the IMD have been asked to explain the slip-ups in Mumbai’s daily weather forecasts. This request comes after a report by The Indian Express claiming the IMD’s rain forecasts for July were 42% inaccurate.
