The historic Elphinstone Bridge (also known as Prabhadevi Bridge) in Mumbai is set to close for two years starting April 15, creating significant traffic challenges for daily commuters. The 125-year-old stone structure, which connects Parel and Prabhadevi, will be demolished to make way for the Worli-Sewri elevated corridor linking Atal Setu to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The century-old Western Railway bridge connecting Sion and Matunga to Worli, Lower Parel, and Mahalaxmi is set to be demolished to pave the way for key infrastructure upgrades. With both public and private vehicles now rerouted, commuters are bracing for delays of up to 30 minutes or more.

Civic groups and local leaders are calling for immediate intervention. The Dadar Traders’ Association has urged the deployment of traffic personnel at busy intersections and the removal of street vendors to keep footpaths clear and traffic flowing. Transport experts, meanwhile, have recommended a comprehensive traffic impact assessment before the closure takes full effect.

Alternate Routes-
Westbound: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road → Tilak Bridge
Eastbound: Senapati Bapat Marg → Bhavani Shankar Road → Kabutarkhana

Despite these measures, roads like Ranade Road, NC Kelkar Marg, and Dadar West are expected to bear the brunt of congestion. MP Arvind Sawant has pushed for a new pedestrian bridge before demolition begins, highlighting concern for students and hospital-goers.
