The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to revamp the long-abandoned Municipal Sports Complex near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) into a new state-of-the-art Town Hall Gymkhana (THG). The new landmark will feature a rooftop viewing gallery offering stunning panoramic vistas of Mumbai’s architectural jewels, including the iconic CSMT and the BMC headquarters.

Municipal Council Hall, rooftop views & more

The BMC’s ambitious ₹40 crore plan will breathe new life into a long-defunct ground-plus-two-storey structure, transforming it into a sleek five-storey facility with two underground parking levels for 60 vehicles.

The upcoming Town Hall Gymkhana (THG) will feature a rooftop restaurant, a Municipal Council Hall for public meetings, and glass capsule lifts offering direct access to a panoramic viewing gallery. Civic officials emphasised that the building’s design will seamlessly blend with the surrounding Gothic and Indo-Saracenic architecture, preserving the visual character of the heritage precinct while adding contemporary functionality.

As part of the revamp, the existing gymkhana will be relocated to a brand-new sports complex in Mahalaxmi. This upcoming facility will offer civic staff a swimming pool, a modern gym, and indoor courts, aligning with BMC’s broader wellness and infrastructure goals.

With tenders floated and work set to begin soon, the project aims to fuse heritage conservation, civic engagement, and tourism, redefining the urban experience in one of Mumbai’s most iconic precincts.
