Once the monsoon ends in the next three months, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will commence construction of an exotic bird park in Mulund. Spread across four acres, the project will include infrastructure to house 24 avian species, making it an extension of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Zoo in Byculla.

Facilities and layout

As per reports, the aviary will cover 10,859 sq. metres, with an additional recreational area featuring a cafeteria, souvenir shop, landscaped spaces, and an interactive awareness centre on exotic and endangered species. Exhibits will replicate natural habitats, while facilities will include a bird hospital, kitchen, and quarantine area. Additionally, the new bird park is being planned based on Singapore's Jurong Bird Park.

Bird zone

The park will be divided into four zones:

  • Australian Zone: Galah Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, White Cockatoo, White Cockatiel, Sun Conure, Golden Conure

  • African Zone: Senegal Parrot, Jardine Parrot, Ostrich

  • Americas Zone: Toco Toucan, Scarlet Macaw

  • Specialty Pheasant Zone: Golden Pheasant, Silver Pheasant, Green Pheasant

In total, around 200 birds across 24 species will be showcased, including Red-breasted Parakeet, Scarlet Macaw, Black Swan and White Peacock.

Timeline & cost

The project is expected to take 24 months, with a maximum completion period of 30 months. Bird procurement will begin once 50% of civil work is completed, with exchanges arranged through other zoos and aviaries. The estimated cost stands at ₹166 crore, with final figures to be detailed by the appointed contractor.
