A new cable car project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has been granted in-principle approval by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. Announced on Tuesday, this project is set to revolutionise urban transportation in the region by easing pressure on the overstretched transport network. Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, shared the update after a key meeting in New Delhi.

Efficient, sustainable, and fast--

The plan will be executed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, bringing together the central and state governments for financial collaboration.

The cable car system aims to connect areas currently facing transportation bottlenecks due to rapid urbanisation. Stretching from Palghar to Uran-Pen, MMR faces pressure on its roads, railways, and metro networks. By providing a sustainable and efficient transport option, the cable car is set to drastically cut travel times, especially between Mumbai's suburbs and the airport.

A detailed survey will soon be conducted to assess the project’s feasibility, and based on the findings, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be created. This cable car project holds the potential to transform commuting in MMR, making travel more efficient, reducing emissions, and improving overall urban mobility.
