Mumbai-Pune Expressway became the first in Maharashtra to have AI-based Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), with it becoming operational last week. Notably, this advanced system can identify and punish traffic violations in real-time by issuing challans, thanks to its AI-backed cameras.

However, ITMS has experienced quite a lot of hiccups in its first week of operation. These include the issuance of wrongful challans and significant delay in issuing them, as well.

Challenges to be tackled over time

Speaking on the issue, State Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar reassured that these initial hiccups will be taken care of sooner rather than later. He pointed towards the fact that this is the first time that this system is being used in the state, making these challenges relatively new to be resolved.

He further added that the administration is currently at the learning stage of the system. Furthermore, he also said that the priority right now is eliminating the issuance of wrongful challans. In this regard, he was quoted by the Indian Express as saying "It's acceptable if a challan isn't issued, but issuing a wrongful challan is not".
