Mumbai continues to shine as India's top educational hub, with four of its prestigious institutions ranking in the top ten of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. IIT Bombay led the way, securing 3rd place in both the Overall and Engineering categories. IIM Mumbai held its strong 6th position in Management, while the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) earned 6th place in Pharmacy. Homi Bhabha National Institute also made its mark, ranking 7th in Research.
IIT Bombay cemented its position among India's elite institutions, holding onto its 3rd rank in both the Overall and Engineering categories. It also secured impressive spots at 4th in Research and 2nd in Innovation. However, the institute did see a dip in two areas, its Management ranking fell from 10th to 14th, and it was overtaken for the top spot in Innovation, moving from 1st to 2nd.
The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) saw a slight drop to 6th in Pharmacy after a three-year streak at 5th, while Homi Bhabha National Institute slipped to 7th in Research. The most significant decline was at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), which fell out of the overall top 100 entirely.
Providing a counterpoint to these setbacks, the University of Mumbai made a remarkable comeback by re-entering the overall top 100 at 92nd place. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni attributed this success to a sustained, strategic focus on boosting research funding, rewarding faculty, and improving graduation outcomes, highlighting a resilient and evolving academic landscape in the city.
