Mumbai is reeling under severe flooding as monsoon rains continue unabated for the fourth day, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert. With over 500mm of rainfall in just 84 hours, roads are submerged, local train services have been halted, and schools have been closed. The city is facing its heaviest downpour in years, with widespread flooding disrupting daily life and transportation across key areas.

Record rainfall halts trains, delays flights, and floods key roads

On Monday, Mumbai received 177mm of rainfall in just 6-8 hours, triggering severe waterlogging in areas like Andheri, Borivali, and Chembur. Local train services on the Harbour, Central, and Western lines were suspended as tracks became submerged. The Andheri Subway remains closed, worsening traffic, while major roads in Dadar, Borivali, and Malad are flooded. More than 100 BEST bus routes have been rerouted.

Airport operations also faced disruptions, with 155 departing flights and 102 inbound flights delayed, according to Flightradar data. The downpour has left the city in chaos, with daily life severely affected.

CM urges citizens to stay indoors

Maharashtra Chief Minister has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel as Mumbai braces for more heavy rain and high tides. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for schools, colleges, and non-essential offices, advising private companies to implement work-from-home measures.

Despite ongoing efforts to manage floodwaters, areas like Hindmata and Sion remain submerged, exposing the city’s vulnerability to monsoon disruptions. Authorities are advising residents to stay home and remain vigilant as emergency teams continue to work tirelessly around the clock.
