Mumbai and its neighbouring areas are expecting moderate to heavy showers in isolated pockets since Tuesday, said the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A cautionary Yellow Alert has been issued for Mumbai and will be in effect throughout the week, due to a trough near the Kerala and Maharashtra coast.

Despite earlier predictions of above-average rainfall for June, senior IMD scientists note that the city is currently experiencing a rainfall deficit of 45 – 50% compared to its usual June precipitation. On average, Mumbai receives around 550 mm of rainfall in June, but so far, IMD's Santacruz Observatory has recorded only 200 mm. Over the entire monsoon season, the city typically receives an average of 2,300 mm of rainfall. 

However, Meteorologists seem optimistic about Mumbai's rainfall deficit, suggesting that the city might catch up in the coming days. Mumbai could potentially bridge the gap with two to three intense spells of showers still ahead. Moreover, the rain intensity is anticipated to ramp up after June 26 – 27.
