Schools to host eight themed activities.

The Maharashtra Government has announced a significant shift in how Republic Day will be observed in schools across the state. From January 26, 2025, Republic Day will no longer be a holiday; instead, students will engage in activities designed to foster a sense of national pride.

A circular issued by the School Education Department on Tuesday has instructed both government and private schools to host a series of patriotic events throughout the day. However, educators are not aligned with the decision.

Schools to host eight themed activities

According to the directive, schools must organise eight activities, including ‘Prabhat Pheri’ (march) after flag-hosting, elocution, poetry recitals, dance, drawing, essay writing and sports, all themed around patriotism. Further, Authorities have directed District Education Officers and inspectors to oversee the execution of these activities.

What educators are saying --

However, the decision has sparked considerable debate. Teachers have argued that students are already stretched thin with numerous events throughout the year. They contend that dedicating an entire day to such celebrations could place unnecessary pressure on both students and educators.
