Mumbai never really hits pause, and keeping up with a city that moves this fast takes more than a quick scroll. From decisions made at civic headquarters to changes on the roads and developments that could shape your daily commute, there is plenty happening beyond the usual headlines. Here are 7 updates in our Mumbai News Roundup that are worth your time.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering a monthly, per-flat waste-processing fee for housing societies classified as bulk waste generators. The charge would apply to societies exempted from processing wet waste on-site and allowed to hand it over to the civic body. Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, premises qualify as bulk waste generators if they have a floor area of at least 20,000 sq m, consume 40,000 litres of water daily or generate at least 100 kg of waste a day. The proposed levy is yet to be finalised.
Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8°C at the Santacruz observatory today, 4.1°C above normal. Colaba recorded 36.4°C, which was 3.2°C above normal. India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for the third consecutive day, warning of heatwave conditions on October 15. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are forecast for Mumbai and Thane on October 17 and 18.
A design error on Mumbai Metro Line 7A near Vile Parle East threatened to put nearly ₹250 crore of completed work at risk. The elevated viaduct required an additional 2.5 metres of clearance for overhead electric wires, which the original design had overlooked. Mumbai International Airport Ltd's survey found that the extra height would not obstruct flight paths, but written clearance from the Airports Authority of India is still awaited. Construction has resumed on the affected stretch, although challenges at underground stations mean the line's overall completion timeline remains uncertain.
BMC fixed deposits fell by ₹3,544 crore over eight months, taking its reserves to ₹77,905 crore, said reports. The decline comes as the civic body carries infrastructure project commitments worth ₹2.34 lakh crore. Under BMC rules, only 50% of its reserves can be used for infrastructure, with the remainder earmarked for pensions, gratuity and contractors' security deposits. BMC is also planning to raise at least ₹10,000 crore through green bonds.
BMC will consider a proposal to widen Siri Road at Malabar Hill using 2,540 sq m of land reserved for Kamala Nehru Park at its general body meeting on October 23. The 535-metre project aims to open the road to light four-wheelers and ease congestion in the area. However, the plan has faced opposition over its environmental impact, with an estimated 72 trees affected, including 48 proposed for felling and 24 for transplantation.
Alstom unveiled the first driverless train for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh on October 14. It is the first of 39 Metropolis trainsets planned for the corridor, with shipment expected by the end of November and delivery to Mumbai by mid-December. The 32.32-km elevated Line 4 will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli in Thane, with 30 stations. The trains will feature wheelchair spaces, bicycle racks and interior cooling systems.
Mumbai-Pune commuters have been urged to use public transport as heavy traffic is expected on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old highway during the Shri Ekvira Devi Navratri festival. Pune authorities have restricted heavy and large vehicles on the old highway between Karla Phata and the Ekvira Devi temple until October 20. From October 15 to 19, these vehicles will also be barred from the stretch between Kusgaon Budruk toll plaza and Vadgaon Phata from 6 am to 10 pm.
