Indian Railways' new fares, tatkal booking rules & more: What passengers need to know

Upcoming next-gen reservation system to handle 40 lakh enquiries/minute.

Effective July 1, Indian Railways is implementing a major revamp of its passenger reservation system, one of the most significant overhauls in recent years. From stricter Tatkal norms to earlier charting and fare tweaks, the changes aim to curb misuse, streamline operations, and make bookings smoother for passengers.

Major changes

  • Stricter Tatkal Rules – Aadhaar authentication now mandatory for Tatkal bookings from July 1, with OTP verification to follow from July 15. Agents will be barred from booking Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes to prioritise individual travellers.

  • Higher Waiting List Limits – The cap on AC coach waitlist tickets has been increased from 25% to 60%, while non-AC coaches will now allow up to 30% waitlisted passengers.

  • Earlier Chart Preparation – Reservation charts will now be prepared 8 hours before departure (instead of 4), with overnight charting for trains leaving before 2 PM.

  • Fare Hike – Nominal increases of 1 paise/km for non-AC and 2 paise/km for AC classes will apply, except for suburban and short-distance (under 500 km) travel.

Tech upgrades ahead

By December 2025, the Railways will roll out a next-gen reservation system capable of handling 1.5 lakh bookings per minute (5x current capacity) and 40 lakh enquiries per minute. The system will support multilingual interfaces, seat preferences, and fare calendars.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised the reforms’ focus on transparency and passenger ease, particularly for last-minute travellers and waitlisted passengers.

Passengers are advised to update their Aadhaar details on IRCTC to avoid disruptions in Tatkal bookings. With these changes, Indian Railways aims to balance demand, security, and convenience in one of the world’s largest rail networks.
