The coastal sand dune ecosystem in Goa, which has been long-neglected, is now in for a solid revamp. Approximately 3 crores have been sanctioned to the state by the World Bank, after the body approved a proposal drafted by the Goa state biodiversity board. Under this programme, Goa will soon be a home to India's first sand dune parks and interpretation centres, along a few stretches. The National Green Tribunal also directed PWD, Goa and other concerned authorities to take immediate remedial measures for the restoration and regeneration of the sand dune ecosystem.

The thematic and interpretation centres will educate locals and tourists on the importance of preserving the sand dune ecosystem. There will also be constructions of bridges, which will be made of eco-friendly materials and these will also reduce the chances of the sand dune vegetation being walked over. The plan also includes the setting up of nurseries of sand dune vegetation, which will allow its replantation on beach stretches, where the vegetation has completely eroded. Morjim and Galibaga beaches are among the ones, who'd be getting this sand dune feature.

Former NIO scientist and ex-member of the GSBB Antonio Mascaren has been appointed as the principal investigator for the project, with Sarmokadam acting as the co-investigator. Sand dunes are also known as the first line of defense from natural calamities like tsunami, storms or high winds, which hit the coast. This initiative will be backed by regular monitoring of flora and fauna on the sand dunes. Consultations between the Morjim biodiversity management committee (BMC) and the stakeholders of this project, have already commenced.
