Goa-based green startup bags first prize at 'ClimateLaunchpad 2021'

Brining worldwide acclaim for Goa, a resident of Ponda and his startup bagged the top prize in a global green business ideas competition the "ClimateLaunchpad 2021". Powered by Europe's main climate innovation initiative EIT-Climate KIC, the international platform saw the participation from 2,136 climate tech start-ups from 55 countries to encourage business development opportunities for aspiring cleantech entrepreneurs. Reportedly, the overall winner, Vishwesh Bhat of Goa and his SMDPower Solutions is a means to cool rooms sensibly, in a more environment-friendly manner than the existing technology.

ClimateLaunchpad 2021 marks India as the green winner!

The basic strategy charging SMDPowerSolutions is a simple idea which aims to reduce wastage of electricity. As per the statement released from The Netherlands by the organisers of ClimateLaunchpad, the clean teach venture is about Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven internet of Things (IoT) developed for smarter and sensible air conditioning and cooling.

The grand prize holder went through regional (continental) finals, months of booth camps, training and coaching to emerge among the 70 finalists at the actual platform. The final round was conducted online recently, wherein SMDPower Solutions emerged with flying colours - in all shades green!

Besides Bhat, the top rankers included Zambia-based Entomo Farm at rank two and Qaptis from Switzerland at rank three. While the first runner-up has developed a technology to turn organic households into feed for livestock while the second runner-up is a plug-in carbon capture kit innovation that can lower the emission of trucks and other heavy vehicles.

It was a big surprise for us to be recognised at an international level after having faced rejection for our innovation and business concept locally! This award is a major morale booster. Product development is at an intermediate stage for market launch, prize money won will help us in taking the development forward to make it market-ready faster," said Vishwesh Bhat.

"We have developed an IoT for air conditioners which makes it efficient so that it consumes 50 percent less electricity, maintaining the same cooling for your space. We started working on this concept in 2018, but failed to take it as a business in Goa due to the subsidised cost of electricity! That is why IoT as an application came to shape which can take our business to any corner of the world. Present IoT is supported with our data analytics Cloud software, which adds AI-ML for its functioning. Research and Development to execution have been going slow due to a fund crunch! The concept being unique, the investors are hesitant! But we are optimistic about the future", Bhat added.

The innovation comes just in time when the world is tinkering on every idea that can help reduce the global carbon footprint. SMDPower Solutions and its product will not only help plug in a vital need but also put India in good stead, symbolic of class-apart technology and innovation in the world. "It means a lot to all of us at SMDP. We have developed our product for the people! So that they won't pay anything extra to use it. The more they use the more electricity will be saved for the nation! It is estimated that 40 million ACs are in use in India, if we could serve even 10 per cent of them at the earliest by the next five years, we will be saving 800 million units of electricity per month whose cost is an average of ₹10/unit of electricity in India.
