In view of the financial troubles ushered by the pandemic, the Goa state administration has announced that the students of the general stream degree courses will receive a 50% rebate in fees, for the current academic session. Reportedly, the Chief Minister declared this scheme in a bid to resolve the issues faced by pupils of BA, B.Sc and B.Com programmes. As per reports, it is expected to benefit nearly 40,000 students in the coastal state.

The CM tweeted, “In view of the ongoing pandemic and prevailing extraordinarily difficult circumstances, the government has taken the decision to waive off 50% of tuition fees, gymkhana fees and cultural fees for the current academic admission in all colleges under the purview of the directorate of higher education, Goa.” As per reports, the sum total of the three categories of fees stands at nearly ₹4,000-₹5,000 in state-funded and state-run colleges.
Officials from various institutes have reported that rural students are faced with multiple difficulties given the problems propelled by the pandemic. Thereby, the fee waiver had become necessary in order to support them. Additionally, reports state that the wards of individuals, who were employed in the informal sector, have suffered majorly on the financial front and now, this intervention will aid them to continue their studies.

Reportedly, the admission process has already started in Goa and the classes for degree programs will start on September 1, as per the current schedule. While the fee waiver will help the students, similar initiatives are also required for other sections of society, assuring comprehensive economic support for all.
