Imagine sandy toes while basking in the sun at a Goan beach, with the wind in your hair but suddenly, a plastic cap pokes your feet or a piece of sharp plastic cuts through your skin! Ouch.
Not much is left to the imagination because this has been a legit issue and has happened to all of us here, at some point. The usage of plastic straws, cups and other cutleries has obviously been high since there are too many tourists, shacks and hotels around. People use them at their own conveniences and then just dispose the items in a careless way, not caring about the others or the environment around!
Goa has long been battling the issue of garbage strewn in public areas, including its pristine beaches, due to the paucity of garbage management systems in the state.

To put a stop to this unhealthy practice of plastic choking the environment here, the State Government has imposed a much-needed ban and rightfully so!
In a meeting earlier, the GTDC board has proposed the usage of glass or paper cups to serve beverages as an apt alternative to plastic cups. There’ll also be an increased number of water filters around so that we don’t have to keep on buying bottled water. There are some eateries in the state where they’ve stopped using plastic since months now, as a move to support the ‘oncoming ban’ which is now a reality.
Reportedly, the major stakeholders of the thriving travel and tourism sector here in the city commented that the lack of proper disposal of garbage was discouraging tourists from visiting Goa and business was slacking.

This was a desired and a much needed step towards formulating an environmentally sustainable tourism sector here in Goa and this will help in conserving marine life to a great extent. Many aquatic animals have lost their lives to plastic because of its toxic nature and this affects not only Goa but the entire nation.
