In a landmark victory, Goa has emerged as the first state across the country to be rabies-free. The Chief Minister on Wednesday informed that the coastal state has had no rabies history in the last three years. This feat was achieved under the banner of the Misson Rabies project, run through a Union grant, to control and eliminate the overall infection here.
Goa controls rabies spread, effectively
Goa has embarked on a milestone achievement in the foray of health and wellness across the state. “We are happy to say that in the last three years, we have not had a single case of rabies in Goa,” the CM reportedly said in a statement on Wednesday. With this, Goa is the first and the only state across the Indian subcontinent which has materialised this pursuit- adding yet another accomplishment under its belt.
The Chief Minister took this opportunity to laud the efficiency of the Mission Rabies project, the Central government campaign which accelerated Goa’s attempt to be a rabies-free state. “The Mission Rabies organization is doing a lot of work with all the political leaders, panchayats and because of awareness created, we were able to achieve this target,” he further added.
“We have now achieved 5,40,593 vaccinations against rabies in dogs and educated nearly a lakh people in dog bite prevention across Goa as well as set up 24-hours rabies surveillance involving an emergency hotline and rapid response team for dog bite victims,” the CM told reporters after a cabinet meeting today.
