Tourism sees an upward curve in Goa & so does the number of Coronavirus cases!

Goa experienced an upward curve in tourism with the month's first long weekend. Hotels witnessed more than 50% bookings and according to stakeholders in the tourism industry, October will be like a pilot episode for the upcoming months. Various changes are expected in the sectors pertaining to travel. Activities will be reopening this month for tourists to indulge in; the Dudhsagar Falls trek has already become accessible.

The tourism director reportedly also mentioned that a chunk of 33% GDP of the state comes from tourism, of which "domestic tourists will be the biggest factor this year". The reformed Tourist Trade Rules, 2020, also have been put in place from this month, which translates to several inspections in the future.

Last year, Goa's state government had established a set of regulations which required online travel aggregators to be registered under the purview of the tourism department. The mandate draft states that hotels and other forms of accommodations in Goa, which are not registered with the concerned authority, will not be allowed to be listed or displayed by the online service providers. So from the 5th of October onwards, the government is starting an investigation where homes which are rented to tourists for shorter stays, will be brought under the Tourism Department. They will be checked for required infrastructure and hygiene standards. At the moment, a selected few top hotels are reaping a benefit from tourists and it is being assumed that smaller businesses will be back in action soon. The oncoming ISL season has also contributed to the surge in tourism and hotel bookings.

Due to the limited number of trains operating to and from Goa, the staff of many establishments are finding it difficult to travel to their designated workspace. This is posing a problem for a lot of shacks across Goa, to operate as they do not have their employees at work due to the lack of transportation.

Although the tourism department has reported a sharp increase, Goa's covid tally is standing at 35,328 as yet with 456 expiries in its records.
