Taking one on a historical venture, this glorious fort that overlooks the majestic Arabian sea was once a magnificent fixture is now mostly in ruins. In an attempt to rejuvenate the history and culture of the state, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) initiated the restoration and beautification work for the Cabo de Rama Fort at an estimated cost of ₹2.9 crores. The iconic 12th-century fort, perched between the two famous beaches of South Goa, Cavelossim and Agonda beach was badly affected due to the harsh weather elements and conservation issues. A two-stage competitive bidding process for its conservation work from eligible contractors was recently released by GTDC.

The completion of work was expected to be completed in a year. But in a swift turn of events, DAA has written to the GTDC’s MD requesting to withdraw the tender as the corporation is yet to obtain the department’s approval before commencing the tendering process.

GTDC aims to resolve issues with DAA

Reportedly, since the project was approved and was sanctioned for financial approval by the cabinet, GTDC is making efforts to quickly resolve the ownership issues with DAA and resume the restoration and beautification project.

Due to the neglect of heritage sites, most of the prestige and revered monuments of Goa have taken a huge hit. Since Cabo de Rama is one of the state's finest and most historical forts, the project for its conservation was much-awaited. The fort predates the presence of the Portuguese in Canacona taluka. The historical fort was built by the Raja of Sounda and is a popular tourist site in Goa today.
