COVID-19 cases continue to loom over the 3000-mark for the second consecutive day in Goa

The planned COVID vaccination drive for people aged 18+ years will begin in Goa, as & when it receives 5 lakh doses, the CM said.

Goa is battling a volatile rise in the number of coronavirus infections each day and the surge continued to cast horror on Thursday, with 3,019 new detections. This is the second consecutive day when fresh tallies have breached the 3,000-mark in Goa, waking an alert across all districts. As per reports, recoveries have been rising continually in Goa, up to 914 on Thursday, however, due to the increased pace of virus transmission, an 81-hour lockdown has now been imposed here to break the chain of infection effectively.

A day ahead of the nationwide phase 3 of the COVID vaccination drive, the state of Goa has announced that it might not be in a situation to inoculate people in the18-45 years age group due to a shortage of doses. The state has placed an order at the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) for 5 lakh COVID jabs and the CM has stated that the vaccination will progress as and when the doses are received.

The Goa CM further announced that "Vaccine manufacturing companies are in the process of expanding their capacities. A third vaccine is also getting introduced" and so far, the state had received 4.3 lakh vaccine doses. "We have vaccinated over 2.5 lakh people with the first dose and over 68,000 with the second dose. We have over 1.1 lakh doses available with us for further vaccination," he added. As yet, about 3,31,731 vaccine jabs have been administered in Goa to the permitted population groups.

Meanwhile, the state has assured that it will plan the vaccination programme in detail and announce it in due course of time. Slots will also be made available to systematise the inoculation procedure for all, with maximum safety.
