Goa to get a first-of-its-kind facility for intellectually disabled children at Mapusa soon

This centre will mainly focus on children and adolescents who are orphans or have lost either of their parents

Goa's first vocational cum residential facility for children with intellectual disabilities will come up at Mapusa. The administration has allocated a plot of land on a long lease at Corlim to the Anandniketan Society, which will be used to build this centre for specially-abled children. Notably, this special cell will come up at the same place where the old de-addiction facility was located at Mapusa.

Facility to come up in 4 years

According to reports, the NGO has been given a deadline of four years to construct this centre. This centre will mainly focus on children and adolescents who are orphans or have lost either of their parents. The authorities have given a green signal to the plans by issuing the construction license for this facility. This centre is expected to have rooms for the parents or guardians who wish to stay with their ward.

With no such facility of this sort till now, families had to shift their children to other states to meet their special needs. This usually led to a disconnect between the family and the specially-abled children. With this first-of-a-kind facility now set to be established in Goa itself, this migration of intellectually-disabled kids is likely to end soon.
