Surgery & casualty wards to soon become functional at South Goa District Hospital

Outpatient departments (OPDs) are already operational at the new South Goa District Hospital.

The multi-storied South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) is being upgraded with new facilities to lessen the load off older hospitals and health institutes. As per reports, the new hospital is likely to house the surgery and casualty departments soon in a bid to clear space at the Hospicio Hospital. Earlier also, all outpatient departments (OPDs) were relocated to the spacious new SGDH for the same reason.

The South Goa District Hospital is being furnished with new wards and departments to cater medical assistance to non-COVID patients. Reportedly, the SGDH was catering to only a handful of COVID-19 patients, the load of other patients was rising steadily due to an acute shortage of space and amenities at the Hospicio Hospital, added reports. This shift aims to distribute the responsibilities between both institutes based on their size and the availability of resources.

Going by reports, the relocation was set in order after the last COVID-19 patient was discharged from the centre on October 12. The medicine wards and gynaecology department, which see the most number of patients, were the first to be shifted to the new hospital.

It may be noted that though no coronavirus patient is admitted here now, the South Goa hospital continues to monitor coronavirus patients in a separate casualty department. People are allowed to visit the hospital to check their oxygen saturation levels, get X-rays or collect home isolation kits or medicines for COVID assistance, informed a hospital staffer.

Meanwhile, the facility of antiretroviral therapy for HIV patients will be available at the Hospicio Hospital. Additionally, a palliative care centre, the Ayush treatment clinic and the district early intervention centre will also be set up here.

A new parking area, behind the hospital, is also on the cards added reports. This new space will be developed under the authority of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation by clearing the over-run of vegetation on the proposed site. As of now, patients' vehicles are permitted to be parked outside the hospital gates which obstructs the movement of the ambulance and oxygen tanks.

A separate project to construct a bus bay outside the Hospicio Hospital is also in the pipeline but is getting delayed in line with the PWD sewerage line work. The development authorities are likely to dig the road to repair the sewer lines. As such, if the bus bay is constructed before the underground sewer fix, it will be a wastage of the taxpayers' money and state resources, explained officials.
