Indore pulse polio campaign Day 1; 77% of children up to age 5 years get vaccinated

Health activists to go door to door on Feb 28 and March 1 to administer polio drops.

The first phase of this year’s pulse polio campaign took off in Indore on Sunday. Alongside the health department, other departments have helped in mobilising children to the polio booths. As a result of the collaborative efforts of these departments, about 77% of children, up to the age of five years have been given the polio drops on day 1.

The state Health Department was entrusted to innoculate 5,60,000 children in the required age group. So far, more than 4 lakh children have been administered polio drops at 3572 booths. Along with health care workers, paramedical and nursing students also helped achieve the feat. The remaining children will be administered with the doses in the remaining two days, activists will go door to door to vaccinate kids who couldn’t make it to the booths on Sunday.

In an attempt to attract children, the state health officials and volunteers designed special booths with colourful drawings, cartoons and toys. The move came in with an aim to keep the kids engaged while they waited for their turn to get vaccinated.

India rolled out the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme on 2 October 1994, when the country accounted for around 60% of the global polio cases. Within two decades, India received ‘Polio-free certification’ from World Health Organization on the 27 March 2014, with the last polio case being reported in Howrah in West Bengal on 13 January 2011.
