India creates a new world record with over 2.5 crore vaccinations in a single day on Friday!

As per logs, over 79 crore doses have been administered in India, to date.

Continuing its fight against coronavirus, India has achieved a new milestone, with the highest number of COVID-19 vaccines given in a single day, on Friday. Under the ambit of the 'Vaccine Sewa' campaign, the country has set a new world record with more than 2.50 crore vaccine doses administered in a single day. As per logs, over 79 crore doses have been administered in India, to date. While more than 59 crore beneficiaries have received their first shot, over 19 crore citizens have received both doses.

54,473 vaccination centres currently operational across India

As per the official data, the single day tally of vaccination in India reached a total of 2,50,10,390 jabs by the end of the day, breaking its own world record of vaccinating 1.09 crore people in a single day, previously. Remarkably, over 1 crore people were vaccinated in India on September 6, August 31 and August 27. According to the data on CoWIN, there are 54,473 vaccination centres functional in the country at present, including 51,403 government sites and 3,070 private centres.

As per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), three states and 3 Union territories (UT) have inoculated 100% of their eligible population with at least one dose. Reportedly, all eligible citizens of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Ladakh and Lakshadweep have taken the first jab. Additionally, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim have also managed to administer at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to their entire eligible populations.

Notably, the nationwide vaccination drive was first rolled out in India on January 16, with only Covishield and Covaxin. While only healthcare workers were inoculated in the first phase, the second phase, focused on inoculating frontline workers, was started on February 1.

The next phase of vaccination was aimed at benefitting people aged over 60 and those aged 45 and above, with specified co-morbidity. This phase commenced on March 1 whereas countrywide vaccination for all citizens aged 45 years and above was initiated onApril 1. Further, the vaccination drive for everyone aged 18 and above was launched on May 1.

Congratulating the citizens on achieving the feat, the Union Health Minister thanked the health care staff for their contribution. The Prime Minister also tweeted, "Every Indian would be proud of today's record vaccination numbers. I acknowledge our doctors, innovators, administrators, nurses, healthcare and all front-line workers who have toiled to make the vaccination drive a success. Let us keep boosting vaccination to defeat COVID-19".
