5 Reasons why Indore deserves to be the cleanest city in the country

Much has been written and said about Indore and it’s way with cleanliness. The city has won the cleanest city title for the third time in a row now and has been actively making efforts to change the lifestyle of people and make cleanliness not just a routine but a habit. Indore is a city known for many things, but here’s why you should care and know about the cleanliness revolution that has happened here.

The trenching ground story

[rebelmouse-image 22610205 original_size=”660×366″ expand=1]

Indore cleared 13 lakh metric tonnes of waste from the 100 acre Devguradiya dumping ground in just six months. Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Singh helped clear a small hill’s worth of garbage that was dumped here. The cleared land is now worth ₹400 crore. The most wonderful aspect of this story is that not only did the IAS officer fastrack the entire process and was successful in clearing 13 Lakh metric tonnes in merely six months, he also did it in a cost effective manner!

Streets being swept at all times of days

[rebelmouse-image 22616921 original_size=”720×960″ expand=1]

It is known that the streets of Indore get sweeped at all times of the day. The ‘safai karamchari’ have had an extremely important role in the clean streets of the city. These workers have adopted the streets and work tirelessly to clean it and people respect them for these efforts, so much so that the workers were recently felicitated for everything they do for the community.

Segregation of recyclable-non recyclable, wet-dry waste

A poster shared by the municipal Corporation to create awareness on waste segregation

People of Indore have not simply stopped at cleaning their city. To make sure that their efforts to encourage recycling and waste management, the government has created several programs to make people aware about segregating type of waste. Several blue and green bins have also been set up in each locality to make sure that the waste is taken care of. Not just that, people actively take part in the initiative and help spread word of mouth about the same.

Composting

[rebelmouse-image 22616922 original_size=”1040×780″ expand=1]

This effort from the Indore government is one of the most laud worthy especially when we speak in numbers. Over 40,000 homes in Indore have adopted composting and brought it into their daily habits. This habit of changing food waste, peels and what not, has lead to a significant decrease in the waste accumulation and has proved pivotal for the city’s waste management.

Beautification of the streets with wall murals and flower pots

[rebelmouse-image 22616924 original_size=”1280×960″ expand=1][rebelmouse-image 22616926 original_size=”1280×960″ expand=1][rebelmouse-image 22616928 original_size=”1032×581″ expand=1][rebelmouse-image 22616930 original_size=”1032×581″ expand=1]

Indore did not just stop at cleaning roads, what the authorities and the people did was way beyond surface cleaning. To prepare for the swachh survekshan 2019 the walls were painted with murals. Highways, flyovers and even public toilets were painted over to make them look more appealing and put together.

If you think these are reasons enough, well the sheer enthusiasm and passion that people of Indore have for cleanliness and to make their city that cleanest is way beyond anything we’ve ever seen. Indore had to win the swachh title, if not for all of these amazing things that they’ve done, then at least for the love of cleanliness people have. There’s a lot to learn here and the rest of the cities can take it as a lesson and work on their issues as well.
