Food Safety and Standards Authority of India or FSSAI is a regulatory body that has put a stamp on the hygiene of the market, making Chappan Dukan officially the cleanest street food market in Indore, if not the country. This is a welcome news for people of Indore and the visitors who chomp down on mountains of food at this popular street food market.
Chappan Dukan has been the favourite of Indoreans since a long time and is only growing in its name and popularity. This 200 meter long street that consists of 56 consecutive shops (hence the name) of different types and varieties of food, feeds thousands of people every single day. The small kiosks at chappan Dukan allegedly contribute to around 40% of the annual 5000 cr turnover that from food markets in the city.

Even though people are aware of the fact that Indore is the cleanest city of the country, the fear of what this “street food” might do to our stomachs still gnaws at the back of our heads. No one can say how old the crust on our favourite chaiwala’s pan is, or was the aloo in the kachori you’re eating washed? People are often scared to see where the foods they so heartily enjoy came from.
Lucky for the people of Indore they don’t have to worry about where the hands of their server was before they touched the golgappa, because this certification means that people at food joints in Chappan Dukaan are gloved and capped and wearing aprons at all times. It also means that you will not find disposable utensils here, but reusable plates and spoons that have an assigned washing area. Also the market has several handwash basins, systematic counter tops for food, sanitizers and dustbins for waste segregation in every corner.
People at the market have also come together and built a common compost for all the food waste which is cleaned by assigned workers when the bin is at three-fourth capacity.
