Indore's Rani Sarai Police HQ to be demolished soon to make way for new metro station

An underground metro station and parking lot will soon take place of the 117-year-old structure.

The Indore Metro project preparations are in full swing and numerous developments are taking place throughout the city to serve the purpose.

To cater to the metro line going from Palasia to Rajwada, an underground metro station is slated to come up where Rani Sarai in Regal Square stands today. The 117-year-old building will be demolished in the following days for the construction of the same.

History of Rani Sarai

Rani Sarai, has been functioning as an active police headquarters for decades. What used to be a Dharamshala at the time of kings and queens was later converted to the crime branch headquarters in Indore.

Built at the time of British rule in 1907, Rani Sarai was constructed in the Mughal style by the then Bombay-based Charles Stevenson and Company. The two-storey structure consists of a bulb dome, as often found in Mughal buildings, and is made of stark dark brown stones. It has slender minarets at its corners, stairs of stone leading to the second floor, huge pillars, vaulted gateways and delicate jaali work.

Soon to take place of this age-old structure, an underground metro station for the metro line going from High Court to Rajwada Square, a parking lot and police station will be built. Issues in compensation are not expected to be faced since Rani Sarai lies in the jurisdiction of the archeological department.

In order for the Indore Metro Priority Corridor to be completed and become functional by August 2024, various government lands are being transferred to the central region by the admin. This comprises vacant lands or offices of some departments.
