Single-use plastic is primarily made of fossil fuel-based chemicals

As per the order issued by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) earlier this week, the use of single-use plastic will be banned in Indore from July 2022. The move is aimed at making the city cleaner and greener.

What is Single-use plastic?

Single-use plastic is primarily made of fossil fuel-based chemicals. According to Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, single-use plastic is used only once before being disposed. Banned products include plastic sticks along with earbuds, plastic sticks used in balloons, plastic rods, candy sticks along with a bunch of items that are made up of plastic or PBC using less than 100-micron thickness.

IMC in its order issued this week urged the citizens to follow certain guidelines in order to curb the use of single-use plastic.

  • Avoid demanding polybags in market.

  • Switch thermocal products with metal glass, plates and spoons.

  • Avoid mixing water with disposable waste.

  • Educate people around about plastic hazards and its substitutes.
