As the name goes, the Little Free Library in Indore, on its face, is a tiny (3-feet) box with free and unlimited books to choose from. Here, you arrive, stop by, take any book you’d like to persue and take it with you (no strings attached). Once you are done reading it, you can return it to this library or also add to the collection here for other readers! Pretty cute, right?
However, the initiative is more than cute. This is one of those more-than-what-it-looks-like movements, a part of a stupendous global social movement contributing to more readers in the world!
All for the love of books
Basically, this movement is trying to give to those who might not have the money to buy books but want to read, or just instill the pleasure and habit of reading books amongst people. A portable and free library, this concept is a personal favourite of book admirers.
The Little Free Library in Indore was started by Taruna Pagarani and her son, Nishchay Pagarani, in their home in Saket Nagar with the notion, ‘take a book, return a book’. It, fundamentally, runs without cards or a membership, or any other formality, and is stocked and restocked by volunteers called ‘Stewards’.
A pop-up library of a kind, anyone can set it up in the premises of their homes, public spaces, alike, and inspire change!
A little house on the prairie
A little house of books, this library has been inspired by over 25,000 such little free libraries around the world. And what we’re trying to say, people, is that we need more humans joining the cause and more social movements like these to face the rampant illiteracy and poverty.
