For the optimization of power distribution in the city and to digitalize the meter reading/bill payment systems for the consumers, the Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company (MP West Discom) has been working on the installation of smart meters in Indore. The department will be installing as many as 1.32 lakh smart meters in the city from December 15.

West Discom will replace the conventional meters with highly-advanced radio frequency smart meters, which will be installed for no cost at different locations in 57 feeders of the city.

Smart meters result in reduction of power loss and provide benefits to consumers

The smart meters will only be installed after they will be tested for 100% efficiency at the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited facility in the Polyground Square area of Indore.

Reportedly, a total of 1.40 lakh meters have already been installed in parts of Indore in different phases. The state-of-the-art smart meters have not only reduced power loss in different areas of Indore but have also helped Discom in identifying and combating electricity theft cases in the city.

Furthermore, the meters also provide convenience to the consumers as the power usage stats can be seen live on the consumer's app. App-based interface facilitates automatic meter reading and timely bill generation. Moreover, the smart meter will provide a report for the power factor rebate, for which the eligible consumer can get a rebate of up to Re 1 per unit.
