MP Transport Department instigates cap on bus permits for Indore-Khandwa route

140 permits of inter-state and inter-district buses were issued on the Indore-Khandwa route

Indore District Administration and the State Transport Department of Madhya Pradesh, announced their plan to rationalise the number of bus permits issued for the Indore-Khandwa road. The move came after incidents involving reckless driving and over-speeding became rampant, and even led to bus accidents and casualties.

The latest such accident claimed the lives of 5 individuals and injured 47 passengers.

Limit to reduce inter-district buses

As per reports, 140 permits for inter-state and inter-district buses were issued on the Indore-Khandwa route. The rationalisation will see a capping on permits issued, depending upon the footfall, while also ensuring the least amount of wait time for passengers.

As of now, at least 40% of buses on the route are inter-state, non-stop buses, while the remaining are inter-district buses. At first, the permits for inter-district buses will be restricted, and further, depending upon the situation, more buses will be rationalised.

The Indore-Khandwa route is a two-lane route that witnesses heavy traffic daily. Considering the two-lane factor, the number of buses operating on the route was very high, and, this led to competition among operators. In turn, drivers resort to speeding, resulting in major mishaps and road accidents.
