Preserving MP's rich flora, authorities push for GI tags for wild mango & teak varieties

MP's state forest department is now working to attain Geographical Indication (GI) tags for providing recognition to the state's wild mango and teak wood varieties found in the Betul forest region. For this, a team of officials from the department will conduct extensive GI tag analysis in the forest.

Additionally, the department has plans to convene a workshop where experts will collaborate on developing a proposal for obtaining the GI tags for state's fauna.

The Betul region has an abundance of teak wood trees which are highly preferred across the country. These are considered to be of excellent quality as they are properly aged, tall and straight, without any knots. Hence there's a significant demand for wood which is quite ideal for manufacturing furniture.

Similarly, GI tagging will be carried out for the wild mangoes of the region which are also quite popular. This will help in providing international recognition to the state's fauna.

The geographical indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to their geographical origin. This further deems the products/crops to be of good quality.

Previously, MP authorities have conducted GI tagging of various regional crops including Basmati rice and Sharbati wheat.
