Jaipur Literature Festival 2019 is here and it is being considered as one of the best years for international fiction as described by the literary fest organisers and we are excited enough to bring Shakespeare back to life!

The Jaipur Literature Festival congregates a diverse mix of global writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sports people and entertainers on one stage to further express and engage in thoughtful conversations and debates!

On January 24, the festival’s 11th edition will be kicking off at Jaipur’s Diggi Palace hotel and this fest will continue till the 28th of January, giving us enough time to embrace this annual erudite carnival!

The Line-up!

This year’s international line-up includes two Pulitzer prize-winning authors, Andrew Sean Greer, who won it for his novel Less in 2018, and Colson Whitehead, who won it the year before for The Underground Railroad.

They will be joined by Andre Aciman, whose 2007 novel Call Me By Your Name was adapted by James Ivory into one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2018; Mary Beard, one of Britain’s most respected Classicists, and writer of the feminist manifesto, Women & Power; and Zimbabwean writer NoViolet Bulawayo, whose debut novel, We Need New Names, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013.

Ben Okri is returning to JLF for the second time since 2012 with a brand new novel, The Freedom Artist, which releases this month and Markus Zusak, the bestselling writer of The Book Thief (2005), which was translated into 40 languages, will be in Jaipur to talk about his long-awaited sixth novel, Bridge of Clay (2018).

The Indian creamy-layer includes Tamilian author and scholar Perumal Murugan, whose works include six novels, four collections of short stories and four anthologies of poetry, along with Uday Prakash, NS Madhavan, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Vikram Chandra, and Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd, whose most-awaited memoir, From a Shepherd Boy to an Intellectual, will be launched at JLF.

Three other books will be launched at the festival: Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Forest of Enchantment, Navin Chawla’s Every Vote Counts: The Story of Elections in India, and Namita Gokhale and Pushpesh Pant’s Raag Pahaadi!

The Music Stage at JLF, every evening during the festival becomes a hotpot of classic beats to fusion music and this year’s list of performers includes Indian Ocean, L Subramaniam, DubFX, Jasbir Jassi, Kutle Khan, and the Nooran Sisters, among other popular artists.

Jaipur has become the melting pot for traditions and new age cultural clash and the city of rich culture and literature is prepping in all its glory for a lit fest!

The 16th National Aerobics, Fitness and Hip Hop Championships are all set to take place in Lucknow from 14-16th of January. The championships will be hosted at the KD Singh Babu Stadium. To promote the sport in the state, a new executive committee for the Uttar Pradesh Aerobics Association has also been formed. The UP Aerobics Association has been given the permission to host the event after receiving recognition from the UP Olympic Association.

Amid the overall pandemic dip, a new subvariant of the COVID-19 Delta mutation threatens to spill new infections and troubles, especially for the people of Indore. As per a genome sequencing report of the National Centre of Disease Control (NCDC), around 7 cases of AY.4 - a sublineage of the Delta variant- have been detected in the district. Notably, the new mutation is presently a 'variant of interest' and not much is known about its transmissibility, virulence and overall severity.

New war rooms to be set up in Lucknow, Kanpur & other major cities in UP to combat air pollution

The use of all 10-year-old diesel and 15-years-old petrol vehicles has been strictly prohibited.

Gearing up for the fight against air pollution, the govt of Uttar Pradesh has decided to set up war rooms in Lucknow, Kanpur and other major cities. The new infrastructure will be set up under the authority of the Road Dust Management and will keep a check on various sources of pollution. As per reports, similar war rooms will also be set up in NCR districts to improve the overall air quality in UP.

Kanpur Metro covers 3,900 metres in its maiden trial run!

The three-coach train covered a distance of 3,900 meters by completing three laps of the 650-meters-long test track.

The Kanpur Metro conducted its first trial run along the depot test track on Monday, ahead of the RDSO trials slated next month. Reportedly, the brand new three-coach train of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation fleet covered a total of 3,900 meters by completing three laps of the 650-meters-long test track. As per the project timeline, the Kanpur metro division is expected to commission public services by the end of this year or early January, next year.

Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region gets final ESZ notification

The boundaries of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary has been declared an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).

Nestled in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the boundaries of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary has been notified as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). As per reports, the decision was rolled out by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to stop the ascending rate of construction activities in the 48 square kilometre (sq km) wide biodiversity-rich area. A new ESZ managing committee has further been set up by the ministry to regulate activities eco-tourism, infrastructure expansion and prohibit the establishment of new polluting industries in the protected zone.
