Public transport in the Pink City could do with a bit of an overhaul. Buses do not ply on a few major routes and most of all, these buses are old, dilapidated, and it would be wise to replace most of them. It seems our cries have been heard because the Jaipur City Transport Services LTD (JCTSL) plans to purchase a total of 600 buses to be added to the existing fleet, 300 of which will be state of the art, electric buses.
The decision to induct the new fleet of buses was taken by local self government department minister-Shanti Dhariwal on Tuesday. The major point to take away from here is that the city is increasingly aiming to get rid of diesel and CNG based buses- which are the most widely used ones in the city.
Earlier, a fleet of almost 50 electric buses had hit the road and they seem to have performed well. The response from Jaipurites was great and now, these 300 new electric buses will be another step towards completely eliminating the need for existing buses that are not just taxing on the environment, but are also dangerous for commuters.
The buses themselves are state of the art, low floor air conditioned buses. The fact that 300 of them run on electricity makes it all the more better to use as you’re not only saving your own fuel, but the environment as well. Certainly, these buses will herald a new era of public transportation in Jaipur. The buses will come with LED screens, CCTV cameras, panic buttons and a few added conveniences.
The other 300 non electric buses will also be more fuel efficient than the current ones. In addition to that, they too will have the facilities of the electric buses. As for the existing buses, they are in a pathetic state to say the least. However, with the recent induction of several low floor buses, the public transport is evolving for the better at a fast rate.
