On Friday, to mark the occasion of National Organ Donation Day, the CM of Rajasthan inaugurated the country’s first organ donor memorial in Jaipur. This exclusive memorial has been established jointly by Mohan Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF) and the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, near the city’s SMS Hospital, in honour of those who have given life to others in need. The names of 38 organ donors who have saved the lives of over 100 people in Rajasthan, Delhi and Mumbai, are etched on the memorial.

Inspired by the popular Jantar Mantar of Jaipur, the sculpture has been designed by Sameer Wheaton and it depicts life looking towards the cosmic heavens in gratitude, compassion and love. On the eve of 27th November, the important historical buildings in the city were illuminated with green lights, to signify the idea of organ donation.
The CM inaugurated the memorial through a virtual programme to mark the occasion and further stated that the initiative is a good start but there is a long road ahead, to spread awareness about this concept. He added, “Organ donation is only 0.08 percent in India while in Spain it is 35 percent, in the US it is 21 percent and in the UK it is 15 percent. So there is a long way to go.” The CM appreciated the efforts and also mentioned that more such infrastructure is needed.
The founder-chairman of MFJCF, Rajiv Arora, said that the memorial would inspire people to donate organs on the theme of ‘Ek Khamoshi, Anek Muskaan, Aao Karein Angdaan.’ Since 2015, the state has made a huge progress pertaining to promulgating awareness about organ donation and reportedly, it has had over 35 families who have donated organs of their close ones after they were declared brain dead.
