One of the few common heart problems in patients above 60 years of age Aortic Stenosis is a chronic obstruction in the aortic valve that hinders the normal flow of blood. Another common cardio issue reported in old people is aortic regurgitation which includes a backward flow of blood due to the inability of the valves to open or close properly. According to a hospital based echocardiography study, around 5% to 8% of the patients showed symptoms of aortic stenosis.

The three primary symptoms of this disease includes exertion chest pain, dizziness and syncope and breathlessness due to heat failure which is likely to happen during the end stage of the stenosis. While patients may not notice any major symptoms initially, this illness grows over time. Moreover, the severity of the symptoms also varies from one person to another owing to the extent of the damage.

A boon for patients with comorbidities

While talking about the procedure Dr. Samin said, "TAVI is FDA approved treatment which offers new hope for aortic stenosis patients as it is minimally invasive, reduces risk of mortality and provides improved survival and better quality of life for any or all types of risk of aortic stenosis."

With this latest non-invasive technology, one doesn't have to go through the surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) procedure. Even though SAVR has been quite successful however, almost 30% of patients with severe aortic stenosis are not eligible for the procedure due to underlying comorbidity, advanced age or a history of previous surgeries. TAVR has become a boon for such patients who were not eligible to get the SAVR procedure. Apart from minimal invasion, TAVR also ensures faster recovery while decreasing the risk of mortality, stroke and the need for dialysis.
