The mausoleum derives its name from the umbrella-like (chhatri) structure of the cenotaphs, which is the final resting place of several famous royals of Rajasthan, including Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur. Built in the 18th century, the edifice of this monument has a cenotaph for each of the maharajas cremated here, engraved with beautiful Rajasthani carvings.

The huge platform, which can be reached via steps, is covered by nets carved out of stone. Beautiful pillars are located towards the centre upon which the umbrella-like structure is built. Among the three primary square-like structures, one of the squares houses the majestic tomb of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh covered by 20 umbrella-like structure. This tomb displays an abundance of craft embodiments ranging from warfare to hunting.

Located towards the left of this square platform, is the tomb of Maharaja Sawai Maan Singh, a great polo player. Further, this complex also houses a temple of Lord Shiva under an old Banyan tree. The third square-like structure houses a number of tombs like that of Raja Jai Singh, made out of makrana marble, and Raja Ram Singh, made out of Italian marble.
