7 places in Kanpur for Ravan Dahan, fireworks & festive fun

Giant effigies, snack breaks and mela madness? Say less!

One place has a towering Ravan, another lights up the sky with firecrackers, while some are all about the mela vibes, food stalls and festive crowds! Kanpur knows how to celebrate Dussehra, and the fun goes well beyond watching Ravan go up in flames. So, grab your family or rally your gang, because here are 7 places in Kanpur to catch Ravan Dahan this year!

1. Ramlila Maidan- Govind Nagar

Forty years in, Govind Nagar’s Ramlila Maidan still hasn’t run out of ways to make Ravana interesting. The effigy stands 90 feet tall, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad flank him, and there’s a ₹11,000 prize for anyone who can rotate his head. Naturally, everyone in the crowd believes they can. It’s one of Kanpur’s most creative Dussehra displays, and the only one where the audience is also quietly competing.

2. Parade

Everyone knows how Ravan Dahan ends, Parade Ground in Kanpur still manages to make it feel like a surprise. The effigy towers over the crowd, its neck moves, and lasers, fire balloons and fireworks go off on cue, all coordinated by artisans who treat the burning as a performance. After 148 years of Ramlila here, the plot hasn’t changed, but the production keeps getting better.

3. Swaroop Nagar

Size isn’t everything, and Swaroop Nagar’s Ravan Dahan makes the case loudly. The effigy stands 30 to 40 feet tall, which is small for Kanpur, but every foot of it is loaded with firecrackers. The finale lands as a synchronized display of sparks, smoke and booms under festive lights, with a crowd that treats it like a neighbourhood event.

4. Kidwai Nagar

Ravana is the last one to arrive at Kidwai Nagar’s Dussehra, and the first one everyone talks about. Before him comes a large-scale Ramlila and a mela run by the local committee, where the crowd is busy with stalls, stories and food. The burning is the finale of a proper community evening, not a standalone show.

5. Motijheel

Motijheel raises huge effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad every Vijayadashami, then sets all three on fire in front of a crowd that has seen this plot before. Nobody minds. The burning is the point, the cheering is the ritual, and good winning on schedule never gets old. Reach early for a clear view, because the front rows fill faster than the family WhatsApp group on Dussehra morning.

6. Rail Bazar

Ravana is burned at Rail Bazar, but he is built long before that. Generations of local artisan families craft the effigy, which stands around 45 to 60 feet, and the work stays in the neighbourhood the way recipes stay in a family. By Vijayadashami, the whole area has a stake in it. So when the flames go up, the crowd isn’t just watching good defeat evil.

7. Lajpat Nagar

Ravan usually gets all the attention, but at Lajpat Nagar’s 43rd Dussehra Mela, Meghnath gets his own 40-foot effigy too. The 70-foot Ravan still stands taller, which is how he likes it, until the fire reaches him and height stops mattering. The mela turns the burning into a full evening, with a crowd that has been coming back for four decades.
