Dosa, Sambhar, Filter Kaapi | 7 Kanpur spots that get it completely right

Dosa, Idli, Sambhar, Chutney Chutney.

If sambhar, dosa, and filter kaapi are your love language, first of all, excellent taste. Second of all, Kanpur has been speaking your language for a while now and it's about time you knew. Seven South Indian food spots that range from old-school classics to menus that'll genuinely surprise you. Comfort food, sorted. Lunch plans, made. You're welcome.

1. Udupi Dakshinam

Kanpur has a South Indian secret, and it goes by the name Udupi Dakshinam. The Coconut Uttapam is the kind of thing you order once and immediately reorder. The Mysore Masala Butter Dosa needs no introduction. Rice with Sambhar and Rasam, a South Indian mini thali that covers all bases. It's genuinely, surprisingly, can't-stop-talking-about-it good.

Cost for two- ₹200

When- 11 AM- 2 PM

Where- 438B, Kalyanpur, Panki Road, Keshavpuram

2. Vaidyam

Kanpur and authentic South Indian food isn't a combination most people see coming, but Vaidyam makes it make complete sense. Ghee podi thatte idli, Benne dosa, Chitrannam, Bagara annam with gutti vankaya curry, dishes that taste less like a menu and more like someone's grandmother had strong opinions about getting it right.

Cost for two- ₹1000

When- 8 AM- 11 PM

Where- 1, 113/142, Ground Floor, Zone 16, Swaroop Nagar

3. Swaagata South 19

Swaagata South 19 came to Kanpur and quietly raised the bar for everyone. With over 70 kinds of dosa on the menu, a Benne that earns its reputation, and a Chettinad paneer with Malabar parotta combination that has no right being this good, this place means serious business. Add a proper South Indian thali and a filter kaapi to finish, and honestly, what more could you possibly ask for.

Cost for two- ₹1000

When- 11 AM- 11:30 PM

Where- 1st Floor, KFC building, 133/372, opposite South X Mall, M Block, Marble Market, Kidwai Nagar

4. New Kesarwani Dosa Corner

Some places earn their reputation not through décor or drama, but through a consistently brilliant dosa. Kesarwani Dosa Corner is exactly that place. The Cheese Masala Dosa is unapologetically indulgent, the Onion Masala Dosa is crisp and spot-on, and the Idli and Vada Sambhar are the kind of classics that remind you why simple food done well beats everything else.

Cost for two- ₹500

When- 12 Noon- 12 Midnight

Where- 7/110, Arya Nagar

5. Kerala Cafe

Kerala Cafe just keeps getting the food right. Fried idli that earns its spot on the must-try list, a Rava Masala Dosa with the kind of crunch that carries across the room, Butter Rava Paneer Dosa is as indulgent, and a Veg Special Mix Uttapam tying it all together. Unpretentious, consistent, and genuinely hard to fault.

Cost for two- 450

When- 9 AM- 10 PM

Where- G.T.Road, IIT Kanpur

6. Kokkum Cafe

Kokkum Cafe plays it traditional and wins every time. The Pesarattu Dosai brings green moong to the table. The Benne Dosai is rich, golden, and entirely too easy to finish. Tatte idli, thick and soft, does exactly what it promises. And the traditional Sambar Rice is the kind of simple, soulful dish that reminds you why classics never go out of style.

Cost for two- ₹750

When- 12:30 PM- 11 PM

Where- Dev Complex, 128/98, G Block, Kidwai Nagar

7. Shiv Madrasi Dosa

Shiva Madrasi Dosa is old-school in the best possible way, no frills, no reinvention, just South Indian classics done with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from years of getting it right. The Masala Dosa is exactly what you want it to be, the Sambhar Vada is reliably brilliant, and the paneer and Sada Uttapam round things out beautifully. The kind of spot that never disappoints because it never pretends to be anything it isn't.

Cost for two- 200

When- 12:30- 10:30 PM

Where- 104A, 247B, P Rd, Sisamau, Nehru Nagar, Ram Bagh
