Kanpur’s premier technology institute, the IIT has yet again scribed a strong statement of innovation and expertise with a rapid soil testing device to its credit. The portable soil testing device, named ‘BhuParikshak’, is a revolutionary technology that is capable of examining and reporting soil health in a record time of 90 seconds! The equipment works in integration with a mobile application and holds the possibility of bringing a major transformation in the field of agricultural engineering.

Developed as the first of its kind invention, based on Near Infrared Spectroscopy Technology, BhuParikshak can help ascertain the real-time soil analysis. Supported by a smart mobile application, the instrument also recommends the required dose of fertilisers to improve the quality of land with respect to the designated crop. The device will greatly assist individuals greatly.
The device has been equipped to detect six important factors, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, organic carbon, clay contents, and cation exchange capacity to determine the soil quality. It then prescribes fertilisers to balance the components and enrich the soil.
“Farmers are our caretakers. But they face a lot of hardships. One such hardship is getting their soil tested and wait for the results for days. That will not be a hassle anymore. I am delighted for the team from IIT Kanpur for developing such a novel device that will assist individual farmers in assessing the health of their soil in almost no time,” Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT-K said in a statement.

BhuParikshak needs only 5 grams of dry soil to conduct the sampling procedure and has the capacity to run 1 lakh tests, the highest among all soil testing devices engineers until now. The instrument consists of a cylindrical device that holds the sample soil and final report through a Bluetooth network, directly to your smartphone in just 90 seconds. Each test is conducted on a unique ID, which can be accessed through BhuParikshak later also.
A model of ease, the mobile application supports a user-friendly interface, which can be translated into local languages for the benefit of the farmers. The results relayed are also simplified that anyone can easily understand the analysis and work on the corrections.
As per reports, the rapid soil testing technology has been transferred to AgroNxt Services, an agritech company. This venture will look after the production, promotion and popularity of the device, henceforth.
