Kanpur’s premier technology institute has leased its expertise to formally launch two major centres of learning and research. The two units, namely the Shivani Centre for the Nurture and Re-Integration of Hindi and Other Indian Languages’ at IIT Kanpur and ‘Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions’ have been generously aided by the IIT for the benefit of its alumni, read reports. With this, the institute aims to bring a diverse range of subjects under its excellence that’ll carve out an inclusive space to conduct specialised research programmes.

IIT Kanpur adopts a vernacular approach

The Indian Institute of Kanpur has established a USD 1 million Shivani Centre to project its courses to students who come from non-English medium academic setups. Parallelly, the move will also promote, nurture and re-integrate Hindi and Other Indian Languages (OILs) in the foray of scholastic instruction here.

From the curation of STEM content, digital tools in languages besides English, the Shivani Centre will facilitate the dissemination of technological tools to increase the ease of use of Hindi and OILs on digital platforms as well. This will include preparatory material, indexing of objectives, translation of courses into Hindi and OILs along with the development of relevant software and other digital tools.

The Shivani Centre is pegged to IIT-K’s step forward to diversify its social-academic milieu and pave a way for the non-English speaking student to harness the best of career or growth opportunities – as per the objectives of the NEP 2020. As per reports, the institute has been set up by IIT-K alumnus Mr Muktesh Pant in the memory of his mother Smt Gaura Pant, Shivani.

A green step towards learning & research

Meanwhile, the ‘Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions’ has been centred on the idea of assisting the nation in developing, adapting and applying technologies to curb emissions. Established with the assistance of the distinguished alumnus of IIT Kanpur Sudhakar Kesavan, former chairman and CEO of ICF International Inc., the venture will promote the idea of sustainable development in line with the Paris Accords.

The Centre is set to become the face of IIT Kanpur’s commitment to being carbon neutral. As per reports, the Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre will exhibit a prototype model to enable low and zero carbon emissions on the campus. Here, the research will include the study of power usage, conservation and management, mobility or transportation, water and waste recycling.

Initially, the strategic exercise will be focused on lighting and cooling, wherein new technology and alternative measures will be implemented via public intervention. All activities under the banner of the Chandrakanta Kesavan Centre will be helmed by the undergraduate and graduate students, concluded reports.
