The newly approved Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering program at IIT Kanpur makes it the first Indian institute to offer a dedicated MTech program in the field of drone technology. Commenting on the decision, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director of the institute, said that the program will help the country create leaders in drone technology and is in line with India's nationwide initiative to become more capable in the field.

The cognitive systems program, on the other hand, will come under the Department of Cognitive sciences at IIT Kanpur.
