Bringing great acclaim to the prestigious institution, the bandage developed at IIT Kanpur has made it to the list of top 10 amazing inventions of India published in London’s Global Business Magazine. The innovative bandage not only provides a quick cure to the injuries on the external body but also prevents the spread of infections.
Developed by a team of experienced scientists
The bandage was designed by Dr Sandeep Patil, the director of E-Spin Nanotech, Tushar Deshpande, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and Yogesh Singh, a project associate in the Centre for Nanoscience under the able guidance of Dr Ashutosh Sharma, secretary of the Department of Science and Technology and Prof. Yogesh Joshi of the Chemical Engineering Department.
As per reports, Dr. Sandeep stated that currently used bandages prevent the penetration of air through the wounds. Due to this, the injuries take a lot of time to heal and dry while there are chances of the spread of infections too. The new bandage allows air ventilation. He further affirmed that the new bandage is made with the help of polydimethylsiloxane, which is a versatile polymer with multiple applications.
First of its kind bandage with microscopic openings
Though the new bandage allows access to air, it blocks the permeability of harmful bacteria and viruses. It would contain the blood flow till the injured person reaches the hospital and receives medical help. Reportedly, Tushar Deshpande said that the bandage with microscopic openings is the first of its kind in the country. The manufacturers have got the patents registered for the latest invention. He further said that the talks with firms for the introduction of the new technology in the market are under process. It is anticipated that the bandage would hit the markets next year.
The global business magazine receives umpteen entries for the listing under many categories and IIT Kanpur securing a mention there is no small feat. The inception of this project happened under the government’s campaign of self-reliant India.
