Continuing the fight against COVID, India has reportedly crossed the 100 crore vaccination mark today! The nation achieved this feat in just over nine months after the inoculation programme was started across the country on January 16, 2021. According to the official data, about 75% of the beneficiaries have received the first dose of the vaccine while only 31% of the entire eligible population has been vaccinated fully, as of now.

In a celebratory tweet, the Prime Minister said, “India scripts history. We are witnessing the triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of 130 crore Indians. Congrats India on crossing 100 crore vaccinations. Gratitude to our doctors, nurses and all those who worked to achieve this feat.”
As India has achieved this historical landmark, the health ministry has planned several events to mark the occasion. Reportedly, the Health Minister will release a song and an audio-visual film at the Red Fort to celebrate this milestone today. Apart from this, the Prime Minister will also visit Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi to celebrate this historic feat.

India’s vaccination drive against the COVID pandemic was initiated on January 16, 2021, starting with the healthcare workers. From February 2, the frontline workers were also permitted to take the jab. This phase of the vaccination drive included the state and central police personnel, Armed Forces, Home Guards, Civil Defence and others. In the next phase starting March 1, the drive was further expanded to include people aged above 60 years and those over 45 years with correlated specified comorbidities. While vaccination for all citizens aged 45 years and above was initiated on April 1, the drive was finally thrown open for all adults from May 1.
As the nation celebrates this monumental achievement, experts urge caution stating the fact that the pandemic is still not over yet. Everyone should stick to COVID-appropriate behaviour and follow all the protocols to stay safe as the threat of this deadly virus will exist until most states record less than 10 fresh cases daily, says the expert.
