Clocking a total of 29,363 infections, the city of Kanpur has recorded the second-highest tally of coronavirus cases across Uttar Pradesh. This soaring number in the city is a direct consequence of the sharp rise in the the number of new infections in the last two weeks. At present, Kanpur is dealing with an active tally of 952, including patients at city hospitals, covid-care centres and those quarantines in home isolation.
Uttar Pradesh begins target testing
On Thursday, Kanpur reported about 125 fresh coronavirus cases and 73 recoveries. City’s fatality count surged to 761 with 4 deaths on Thursday.
This case rise has been observed as a state phenomenon and to counter this wave, the Uttar Pradesh Government has launched a focused 12 day sampling test drive across the state. Initiated on Thursday, November 19, the campaign will conclude on November 30. Under the ambit of this drive, samples will be collected from designated groups on scheduled dates. The Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare and Additional Chied Secretary, announced the schedule for the same in a joint press conference:
- November 19 – November 21 : State slums
- November 22: Temporary and permanent prisons
- November 23: Children shelter homes
- November 24: Old age homes and women shelter homes
- November 25: Street vendors
- November 26: Teachers and staff of classes 9 to 12
- November 27: Government and private offices
- November 28 – November 30: Market areas and weekly markets
Earlier also, the state had launched a 16 day targeted testing drive in the state. Running from October 29 to November 9, the drive was focussed on testing groups dealing with increased direct-human contact including auto-rickshaw drivers, rickshaw pullers, beauty parlour staff, sweet shop staff, security staff of malls, staff of electronics shops and vehicle showrooms, retail shop keepers, people working in fruit and vegetable markets.

This drive will help the state to intercept the virus prevalence across all districts ahead of the expected second wave of the coronavirus. The stats revealed by this initiative will help the administrative and medical authorites to chalk out a plan to arrest the spread of coronavirus during the months of peak surge.
