Electric buses to ply on the roads of Kanpur from next year; trial runs underway

First set of electronic buses to take over city roads, starting January

Giving a major boost to environment-friendly means of public transportation, Kanpur welcomed a new fleet of 13 electronic buses on Sunday. Reportedly, this lot is the first consignment of the 100 city buses allotted to the district by the state. These zero-pollution buses will first undergo trial runs for a month and will begin operations starting the first week of December. Another 47 buses are likely to be delivered in the second week of December itself. The last lot of 40 e-buses is expected to arrive in Kanpur in January 2022.

Electronic charging stations underway for new e-buses

As of now, the PMI Electro consortium is working to complete the installation of 25 charging points for the 100 buses in Kanpur. Notably, about 5 of these will be ready by November 27 for the proper functioning of the 13 e-vehicles. According to the project timeline, the new bus lot can use these charging units as early as November 28 and kickstart their trial runs with ease and begin commercial operations starting January.

Meanwhile, the remaining 20 charging points will likely be set up by December 15. These will be made functional after the stipulated one week of testing, stated reports. These power stations will also be fitted with large public toilets, a civic need identified by the Divisional Commissioner. Accordingly, the Municipal Commissioner has been tasked to prepare an estimate for the same and execute it in the next two months.

Additional features & facets of the e-bus system

The new e-bus system will also include a host of additional features such as CCTV cameras, panic buttons, wireless alarms sets and an emergency brake system. Further, a committee has also been ordained, which will include a City Bus Officer, a Smart City Officer, a PMI representative and one expert from IIT or HBTU to conduct the final check and certification of the accessory provision, before the launch of the general operations.

Besides this, a road-widening project and underground cabling scheme are lined up for completion by December 15, for the proper functioning of these electric buses. Another proposal to repair and construct new roads, within a 500-meter radius of the upcoming charging stations is also in the pipeline. The project scope will also include the repair work of all other broken roads in the city to smoothen the runs of electronic buses, concluded reports. All operations within this scheme will be completed by the end of this year, for a streamlined flow of traffic by January 2022.
